Mohawks Legends:

The infamous story of '96
Taken from E-mail extracts

Subject: Familiar face from '96 (roughly)
------------------------

From: Bob
Hello legends,

So, I turn up to practice in Brussels and there's 3 Americans I'd never seen before there. Turns out one of them lives and works in Brussels, and the other 3 are his friends visiting. By sheer chance I end up talking to him after practice, he asks me where I'm from in the UK, and one thing leads to another, "I'm an ex-mohawk".
So, turns out this guy picked up with Mohawks at Paga, and kept in touch, and later on was contacted by Carthorse to play at a tournament in the UK with his friend (he was studying in France and his friend in Germany), a tournament which he and his friend Sven went to, and turns out the Mohawks won!
Apparently it was Uni nationals, and someone (he said a Si?) who they'd played in the semi-finals found out that they didn't actually study in the UK, and as such the Mohawks had to hand down the trophy and made front page Ultimatum news?
Anyway, he loves you guys, was pleased to hear that ex-mohawks are "Mohawk legends", and he for sure is one!
He treasures a copy of Ultimatum with him and his friend on the cover with something along the lines of "2 'rather useful' ineligible players disqualify Mohawks of nationals title"
He also wondered if anyone still called Penis fingers "Penis fingers" I reassured him that we did. He wondered where everybody is these days. So if you know an "Alex", get in touch. Or just wait a bit. I'll see him this weekend at a Belgian tournie, and can give him this group's address.

What are the chances eh?

love from Belgium,

Bob xx
PS: Anyone got that Ultimatum cover/story we could scan for the website? Also if someone has a fuller version we could stick it up as good fun Mohawks history. (or any others you can think of).

That sounds like motor boat Jones, if my memory serves me correctly.

Good job Bob for tracking him down. Technically Sussex was their closest UK
university, I think we should put in a petition to the UKU.

Cheers

aha, you've met Alex 'Boat' Tiersky!

I was captain in 96, so can confirm pretty much everything he told you. We only had 9 players for the 1st team for student outdoors and when Boat and Sven asked if they could come to play another tournament for the Mohawks we quickly realised that as they studied in France and Germany respectively, Brighton was technically their closest university team. we beat Catch 22 by a single point in the semi final, and then stuck it to Mythago 17-5 in the final. The captain of Catch 22, Si Hill, made friends with Sven after the game and they exchanged emails after the tournament had finished. Si Hill figured out something was amiss when he realised Sven was mailing from a German university, and at that time he (si) was also the UK Student Coordinator. It went downhill from there pretty quickly, we were publicly shamed (though we saw it as glory) on the front page of Ultimatum and we had to give the trophy to Mythago. I reckon we would have won it anyway, and 2 years later we gloriously reclaimed it led by Locks, beating Mythago in the finals again 17-5.

Some interesting facts about that tournament

- the Mohawks 2nd team played the whole tournament with only 5 players. Pants was captain and I wouldn't let them have any of the 1st teamers ;)

- we all wore warpaint for the final, I still have some photos somewhere

- The mixed team that came 2nd in World Clubs recently in Perth included 3 players from that team: Boat, Sven and Yusi

- For posterity, the other players on the 96 winning team were me, Locks, Frank, Andy Wales, Luc, YK, Tom 'Tump' Bollen and Dr Love

Yesyesyes! I will also confirm The Skipper's account.
Alexandre Tiersky and Jason Draut - aka MotorBoat
Jones and Sven Nurendorfer (Boat & Sven). Those
frisbee mercenaries of yore were always ready to
travel long and sleep rough for the chance to "huck it
or you're nuthin'." These certainly are events that
need to be documented on the Mohawks History page. It
was my first ever ultimate tournament. I also have
some photos, AND a copy of that Ultimatum front page
somewhere. I should scan 'em or something. Also, for a
pretty comprehensive account of the Mohawks' exploits
from 96-1999, try to get a look at YK's "This is your
(Mohawk) Life" album that we made for him when he was
about to leave the UK. It centres on The Typhoon
himself, but covers events such as '96 student
nationals all the way up to the same event in '99. YK
- WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO SCAN THAT FOR US???

Saw Tommy Tump last weekend, and we fondly remembered
the Sheffield tournament. Knowing that Catch 22 were
tiring, and were short on subs, Tom took great
pleasure in incessantly running the length of the
field with his defender in tow with no attempt nor
intention of actually getting the disc.

The '96 season was a classic, seeing the beginning of
many Mohawk traditions. The annual space-cake picnic;
the famous Mohawk tribal cheer (Aa-ma; eee-nay-nah!);
the Dream game; 2-truth-one-lie (or 3- truth, if you
were playing with the Pantsman) and the
Sports-Centre-to-East-Slope Golf course. (Actually,
I'm not sure whether you still do any of those, so
perhaps it means nothing to you guys!)

Ahhhhh, happy days, happy days!

Locks

P.S. I have Boat's e-mail address, if you anyone needs
it.

Damn that brings back memories of legendary times from the mists of Mohawks history... I can also confirm Skipper & Lock's memories of those events (should copy & paste those recollections into the 'hawks website...)

Cheers Bob for starting that round of reminiscing and say hi to Motorboat Jones for me.

Locks mate, that scan is coming right up... *cough*...

Seriously, we should beef up the Legends section on the Mohawks website - there are obviously a lot of stories to tell (e.g. how PeFi got her name etc)...

On another note, how is everyone?

FYI - I have returned to Malaysia shores and hooked up with the Ultimate scene here (1 or 2 have even heard of the Mohawks! Fame!). Its small but growing and I've picked up with a local team to play a tournament this weekend against some local teams, a Singaporean team and a mixed regional team. Should be fun & please Buddha let my knee hold up.

Hi all

Thought I'd add my belated memories to the Alex 'Motorboat' Jones story..

Funnily enough - at Worlds in Perth in November 06 the first person I bumped
into at Sydney airport, almost exactly 10 years after I first met him, was
Alex. It is indeed a small world and Ultimate provides many familiar faces
around the world. And of course I bumped into Yusi who was playing on the
same team. Funny that both of them made the World Clubs final - they breed
them well in the Mohawks ;-)

In regards the infamous 1996 disqualification, Mohawks will be pleased to
note that I got the trophy engraved anyway, then had it engraved/crossed
out, and then sent it back to the organisers.

With regard my nickname (Pefi), I have lost count of the number of people
who have approached me at some point in the last ten years (regardless of
where I am in the world) and said..'oh yeah - I know you - Pefi isn't it?'.
I mostly have Waggle and Locks to thank for keeping that name alive.
hmm
