**Transport and Final Regionals Info**

Mohawks!

Bright and early Saturday morning we will be leaving for St Albans. The transport plan is attached here so look now and organise yourselves as to where you need to be. We will not wait for you and cars/minibuses will be leaving at 6:30 AM!

The weather does not look fantastic so pack warm clothes and things to keep you dry (including plastic bags to keep your bag covered). Remember Mohawks Kit, boots, sleeping stuff, some food for the day and money for other stuff.

Saturday evening we will all be going to a local carvery place near to Charlie’s, which offers various meals and vegetarian options. It’s the only place that will fit 40 people and they are getting more chefs in just for us so I hope you are all okay with that (you don’t really have a choice if you are not!)

We are staying at Charlie’s parents house and there are a few rules, which I think you will all understand considering there are 40 people staying. These are:

  • Whilst they are very happy to host everyone this weekend to help us out, they would like us all to remember that it is still their home and that it is respected as such, rubbish and bins etc. Their room is strictly off limits to Mohawks, there is enough space in the house that you wont need to go there.
  • Shoes off in the porch please.
  • Dizzy, the dog, is very friendly and will want to say hello to each and everyone of you, probably several times. He may well get a bit excited when we all turn up, but thats perfectly normal, he is just excited. Do keep food in bags though please everyone, just incase!
  • Parking, drivers please park on the drive, we will make space so that all vehicles can fit on it. The road is not all ours and children do play on it, so bare that in mind too please.
  • No smoking either in the house, though don’t think this applies to anyone.

That is about everything you need to know! Check the transport plan on the link below, and organise yourselves with your particular driver. Any questions you may have just give me a bell!

Peace Out!

LETS GO HAWKS!

Mixed Outdoor Nationals Team List

Hi everyone,

Mixed Outdoor Nationals is in two weeks so I thought I’d best make a decision about the team we are taking. We only got one team unfortunately, meaning places have been very limited. I’m sorry for this but hopefully there are plenty of opportunities to play mixed through Brighton Ultimate. The process of picking this team has been very difficult given the current crop of extremely talented and athletic individuals. I am sorry for those who didn’t make the team, but there is no shame in that given the depth of talent we have on our roster at the moment.

The team is below. Anyone who signed up using the GDoc but isn’t on the team I have contacted with some feedback via email or Facebook, but let me know if you think I have missed you, or you didn’t receive it.

The Mohawks Mixed Outdoor Team 2013 are:
Megan Hurst
Abi Cohman
Rachel Clark
Kim Isaac
Becca Easey
Sophie Nicholls
Selina Lee
Anastasia Riordan-Eva
John Maule (c)
Lawrence Hill
Joshua George
Richard Roberts
Ed Hamiltoe
Sam Airey
James Wotherspoon
Alex Buckley
Hayden Slaughter

Congratulation to those people – I will be in touch shortly.

INFORMATION

We will be leaving early Saturday morning and returning Sunday evening. Charlie has kindly offered his house as accommodation this weekend which means we don’t have to pay extra to sleep on a church hall! There are a few house rules that we are setting to make sure nobody over steps the mark and these will follow later.

WHAT TO BRING

Kit (red/black shirt, white shorts, boots), towel, change of clothes, food for breakfast and lunch, some money for an evening meal, sleeping bag/roll matt.

Wednesday practice will be in your regionals teams so try and come down to practice playing with each other! Anyone who isn’t coming next weekend is still welcome to come to practice too!

I will email in the week to explain transport and costs for the weekend. We are waiting to hear from the university to make it cheaper but prepare for the weekend to cost you £25 which needs to be paid to the Mohawks account before we leave for the weekend. Be ready to transfer money this week and if anyone has any questions about teams or can no longer play, please let me or Lawrence know ASAP.

Time to get excited Mohawks!!

Mixed Outdoor Nationals – 16th/17th March – Durham

Hi ‘hawks,

Mixed Outdoor Nationals is fast approaching. I am looking to take a tight team to back-up our recent win of mixed indoor nationals with another strong performance worthy of the pedigree of Mohawks.

I need to know who wants play! Please fill in this GForm:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEp4aGpCclFpc0RaYmc2MmhIS0ZUbkE6MQ

The tournament is a lot of fun and I want to get as many people to play it as possible. Unfortunately the powers-that-be have not been kind to us and have put this tournament miles and miles up north in Durham. Therefore we have a general transport problem, and taking two teams could be tricky and expensive, however if enough people are enthusiastic about playing then I will see what I can do.

Regardless of your experience, if you want be considered for a spot on a Mohawks team at University Mixed Outdoor Nationals then please fill in the form!

Friday Indoor Sessions

Hi all,

Over the next few Friday sessions, I’ll be coaching some basic principles of playing, and playing against, zone indoors. These sessions will be open to everyone in the club, but we’ll be focusing on developing the knowledge and skills of our newer members in particular.

The first session is this Friday2 til 4pm in Hall 1 in the Sports Centre (right near where we have outdoor training). All you’ll need is a pair of clean indoor trainers, a light and a dark shirt, and your brain!

It’s a great opportunity for any first or second years to learn the fundamentals of zone, and a chance for anyone more experienced to brush up their knowledge and get some practice.

Before Friday, I’m also going to get a short piece up on some of the ideas behind zone, especially indoors. It’s not required reading before the session (I’ve been a seminar tutor, I know how futile that is!), but it might help you to know some basic stuff about what’s going on, why we might use zone and so on.

Hope to see you all there!

Friday Practices This Term

Hi Mohawks,

I am sure you are all itching to play some ultimate with all this snow nonsense, so I thought I’d better inform everyone about Friday practice this term.

We do have the sports hall booked from next Friday (1st Feb) onwards, BUT this hall time is being used by the two Mohawks teams going to mixed indoor nationals in a couple of weeks’ time. However you are all encouraged to arrange informal outdoor practices on Fridays, perhaps starting at 2pm on Stanmer Park. If you build it they will come, as they say.

After mixed nationals is done we will review what to do with the indoor session – it may be an invite practice, open to all, or we may look to move the ‘official’ practice outdoors to make the most of the season.

It is important that you don’t use Russell’s Clump as, for the time being, we do not have it booked on a Friday. The first one will be tomorrow (25th Jan) – Simba Kennedy has volunteered to lead the way this week and will be there with kit, boots, a disc, and a smile, come rain or shine (or ice).

Fondest and bestest wishes,
Shimmy John

The Term in Preview: Spring 2013 and beyond…

It’s going to be a busy term, but one that I am certainly relishing. It’s a great time to be a Mohawk, with lots of opportunities to play at all levels, whether just for fun or to push yourself as hard as you can. So here’s a little preview of just some of the ultimate-related events happening this term (and a bit about this summer) for you. But I couldn’t cover or predict everything – stay tuned to this website for news of extra practices/tournaments!

January

“Hardcore Hove” Monday practice restarts on the 7th (and then every Monday), 7pm-9pm at Hove Recreation Ground. Despite the “Hardcore” label, this practice is open to everyone and all Mohawks are encouraged to attend. It will give you the chance to get to know the players from Brighton Ultimate and meet more of the Panthers in a friendly, development-focussed environment.

The 13th is the first Longface Sundays practice. Come along to Stanmer Park to work on whatever you want to, do a couple of simple drills and then play a game. A great opportunity to get some extra training in with a top quality player/coach there to guide you.

Local open tour team Brighton are also holding trials for their open team over the weekend of the 19th and 20th. They are looking for athletic, young and talented players (Mohawks are always a good choice!) to better their 4th place finish at UK Club Nationals 2012, and 9th place in Europe. Sign up! There’s even rumours of the team being re-branded under a new name!

Meanwhile our GB U23s (Lawrence, Ashley, Kim, Emma) will be away making the Mohawks presence felt at a training camp, amongst the best young ultimate players the country has to offer.

And adding to a bumper ultimate weekend, the 19th also sees the inaugural Mohawks Campus Halls Cup, part of the student union’s multi-sport league where players from each of the halls (and off campus!) battle it out to win points for their hall. The details are just being finalised, but it may be run as a women’s event, with the aim to cast a wide net over campus and introduce more women to the sport. But watch this space – sign-ups for that event will be available in due course.

Mohawks regular Wednesday practices begin again on the 23rd January, on the clump. Keep your eyes peeled for updates to this website as there may be other informal sessions before then!

Our mixed teams are preparing for indoor nationals, with a one-day tournament in London on Sunday 27th January. The tournament is being held in an enormous sprung-wood hall, created as a training venue for the London 2012 Olympics.

February

The 2nd/3rd is the first GB U20s trial for both the women’s and the open teams. If you were born on or after January 1st 1994 then you should sign up! If you make the squad you will join a long history of Mohawks who have represented GB at Junior level, including Ashley Yeo and 2010/11 Grand Slam-winning Open Captain, Jack Beezer.

Two teams of Mohawks will go to university mixed indoor nationals in Wolverhampton on 9th/10th February, with a team in Division 1 and another in Division 2. As ever, updates during the weekend will be available via Twitter.

The following weekend sees the Brighton Ultimate Draft Indoor Tournament. The brain child of our coach Felix Shardlow, and follow-up to last summer’s very successful Draft League, BUDIT will begin with an exciting live draft night on Friday 15th at The Druids where captains will select their rosters from the available players. These teams will then play the tournament over the weekend. Sign-ups are open now.

If draft ultimate isn’t your thing then come down to the sea front on the morning of Sunday 16th to watch at least two Mohawks (your humble mixed captain and Helen Brunt) running in the Brighton Half Marathon. For those who fancy running it – normal entries are sold out now but you may have the chance to get a charity place. I am raising money for Sane and will be badgering you all to sponsor me soon.

Finally, on the 23rd a team of 15 open players will travel to Ireland to represent Mohawks on the international scene in a high-level open tournament. Other teams competing include Ireland’s Under 23s and Belgian Champions, Gentle. The Siege of Limerick promises to be a tough challenge for a development team keen to make the most of playing on the smooth, grippy 3G pitches out there. We’re very grateful to Sussex Sport for helping fund this trip through the Focus Sport scheme.

Perhaps our new kit (to be worn with pride) will arrive at some point during February too…

March

The 9th/10th sees the first of the university outdoor tournaments – open outdoor regionals. As with every year we will no doubt be looking to field several Mohawks teams so everyone gets a chance to play a competitive outdoor tournament. Sometimes it snows!

There’s no rest for the wicked, and the very next weekend (16th/17th) is university mixed outdoor nationals. Mohawks will be looking to field at least one strong team (hopefully two), and hoping to improve on last year’s 4th place finish. Selection for mixed outdoor nationals will occur in early March, and will be based on performance at practice so everyone has a chance to get on the team!

Luckily our Easter break comes around just in time to hop on a plane to Italy to play in the most prestigious club beach tournament in the world – Paganello. There are several Brighton-based teams representing across the open, mixed and junior divisions, playing against some of the best players and teams in the world. From the red wine party on the Thursday night, to Felix inevitably conducting the crowd during the finals on Sunday, ever year is filled with the promise of more epic memories and embarrassing anecdotes.

April

The first weekend in April (6th/7th) sees the first of the Mixed Tour events run by the UKU. Tour is a series of large national-level club tournaments bringing together the best clubs from around Britain in high-level and enjoyable competition. Mixed tour runs in the spring and Open & Women’s tour in the summer, providing crucial preparation for UKU Club Nationals in late August. There will surely be several teams entering from Brighton, so get yourself involved with Brighton Ultimate if you are interested in pushing your play to the next level, or just want to meet a bunch of new players, through playing tour. Every year there are many Mohawks and former Mohawks playing in top-teams at tour.

The end of our term dovetails nicely with the end of the university season, with Open & Women’s University Nationals on the 20th/21st April. This is the tournament we have been building towards since September. The Squaws and (subject to qualification via regionals) the open team, will both be looking to uphold the fearsome reputation of the Mohawks on the national stage. There is a fair amount of pressure on our teams, being holders of both the Women’s and Open titles for the past two years. Once again the alumni cup runs alongside the university divisions so expect some former Mohawks to grace the tournament with their presence and banter too.

and beyond…

The last tournament of the university season doesn’t mean it’s the end of your season, though. There is still mixed tour, open/women’s tour, hat tournaments, international tournaments, beach tournaments, UKU regionals, UKU nationals, Club Euros, the World Games, U23 Worlds, U20 Euros, and Beach Euros all to look forward to. And if you aren’t playing in all of these, many of them can be watched or followed online. You will probably be able spot at least one Mohawk, or former Mohawk playing in every one of these events. Whether you want to be on the pitch making a game-saving block on an international stage, or the life and soul of the party at a hat tournament somewhere in Asia, you will be joining a long line of Mohawks all contributing to the history, success and reputation of the name.

With such a calendar of university events, and Mohawks playing in every major competition this summer, we should be especially proud to be Mohawks this year, and can all share the successes and triumphs of every Mohawk, at every level of the sport. Every one of us should look forward to doing our bit to uphold the Mohawks’ reputation for elite performance, spirited play and all-round love for the ultimate community. See you on the field.

Exiting News for 2013!

Hey Mohawks!

Your friendly Captain here with holiday wishes and good tidings… And news about the amazing up-coming outdoor season we are all about to go into!

Quick couple of things ready for a big outdoor season next term:

Firstly, the coaches and captains have had a sit down and looked through all the feedback we got from last term’s training sessions and we have taken it all on board so the plan for next term should be really focused on what we need to do to make you all even more amazing as players and make sure you all have a great time doing it 🙂

Secondly, the format of trainings will be slightly different from now on. I will post exact times and dates for the first training sessions back very soon so keep an eye out for that!

Another very important thing to mention is that so far the Facebook group and page have been used fairly heavily up until now. However from now on, all information will be on the FORUM so pleeease make sure you check that regularly to make sure you are up to date with everything that is going on in the club. Maybe even have it as one of your home tabs so its there every time you open up the internet 🙂

Lastly, but most definitely not least, make sure you keep throwing regularly and do some fitness before you get back to uni. It really shows who has been throwing over the holiday and who hasn’t and it makes a massive difference to the effectivness of training if we all work on our skills outside of Wednesday practices. Next term is going to be a lot more focused and more intense at trainings to make sure we all get the most out of the limited training time we have. So go burn off all that turkey and christmas pudding and get yourselves in tip top shape for what promises to be an awesome season for this club 😀

I hope you all have a great New Year and I can’t wait for a wicked 2013 with all you Hawks!!

Yours excitedly,

Lorenzo / Jasmine

My Thoughts After Nationals

Fourth place at nationals would be a massive achievement for 90% of the teams in the UK. But for us we walked away feeling like we’d missed an opportunity that we’d messed it up. There’s lots of reason that you can put forward as to why it didn’t happen for us and a lot more than I will talk about here.

Going into the weekend we felt like we were the best there was and thought that we might have some tough games but we would come through them. On reflection I think we were right and wrong at the same time. We definitely did have the best group of players, one on one nobody could go blow for blow with us. However that’s not what it takes to win, we might have been the best collection of players but we certainly weren’t the best TEAM. It’s the old saying which gets banded around so much that you get sick of hearing that “the best players don’t make the best team” but on this occasion it was 100% true. It was no one’s fault and it can’t be, to be a team you have to work to improve things together. We simply didn’t do enough, train enough, or play enough together.

I look at Birmingham and think how the hell did they even get close to us, they probably don’t have a player in the team that would make the top four of ours. Teamwork goes a long way but we weren’t that bad. Then I think back to 2010 when we were chasing our first national championship for a long time. We weren’t expected to do anything special, maybe top four would have been great for Mohawks in a lot of other people’s eyes. We had a belief that we would win it all and that we were the best team and had something to prove and something to fight for. Even though Birmingham came up short they reminded me a lot of that team we had in 2010. The hunger was there, the excitement, the cohesion and the belief that they could win, they worked hard and ran all day on defence. They were probably just two top end players short of being able to win it all.

I look at our team and think we wanted to win but maybe the belief wasn’t right. I think we all thought it would come to us easily just like regionals had and like we expected. It’s nationals and the quality is ever improving, no team is going to be able to show up and hope for an easy ride. The way we went up in games and then expected to coast made me think that this was certainly one of our big problems. Maybe we had the desire to win just didn’t want to work hard for it.

Then I think about the Brimingham game again and I think they just wanted it more, 3rd to them meant a lot more than it did to us. We have got to the position where we are at the top but because most of those people that worked there arses off in those meaningless games over the years building up to this have gone there are few who realise that pain that it takes to be the best. It’s time to realise that it’s hard to get to the top but it’s even harder to stay there.

At some point it might be a year it might be two or three, the club will have to rebuild and we need to keep the desire and spirit to succeed going. We need to work as hard as we can and then go a little bit further. Winning doesn’t come easily at all that’s why they only let one team do it. It’s just as much about the willingness, desire and hard work that it takes as it is about the tools that you have. Only a few are lucky enough to have the players that we do, if we can combine all of the aspects above then we can and will be the best once more and for a long time.
