Indoor Training on Friday!

Hey all,

Quick addition to Pete’s update: tomorrow from 2-4pm is an indoor training session, open to everyone in the club.

Everyone in the club with clean, non-marking shoes, that is – make sure you bring these, and haven’t just walked across the mud outside the sports centre in them!

It’s at the Sports Centre, next to outdoor training and we’re in the big hall. Make sure you bring a white/red shirt and a black/dark shirt, and some water – it gets pretty toasty in there.

See you tomorrow!

UMIR Start times!

Hi mixed players!

Really looking forward to this weekend, can’t wait to see Mohawks rock this region. I have emailed everyone playing with the tournament schedule, information pack and indoor rules – worth a look!

Here are some directions from campus to the venue http://mohawks.co.uk/forum/regionals-venue-directions-t1395.html. If you have any doubts or trouble on the day then call your captain(s) or me.

Remember you need to bring:

Clean, non-marking shoes

If you don’t have a red and a black shirt then let me or your team captain know NOW! We will do our best to help you out with some spares. Don’t arrive on Saturday and expect to borrow kit unless you have specifically asked for it!

The pools & seedings have changed since the information pack & the email I sent yesterday. Games are 18 minutes long, with one minute between games. One 30 second timeout per team, per match, to be taken between points only and not in the last 3 minutes of a match.

IMPORTANT – Regionals teams and times changes.

Hi all,

So due to masses of people dropping out, we have had to pull one of the teams out of regionals :(

People have been shuffled around in teams so check the lists below to see where you are now!
Everyone who wants to play is still playing, just check what team you are now on.

(Mo 6 will become a pick up game on the schedule).

Here is the Schedule. Please check it to see when you start.

Mohawks 1,2 & 3 will be starting at or very soon after 9am.

Mohawks 4 & 5 will be starting at or very soon after 1.20pm.
The venue this weekend is very close to campus but hidden away a bit so here are some directions which should get you there safely!

It is at BACA (Brighton Aldridge Community Academy)

http://www.baca-uk.org.uk/contact-us/how-to-find-us/

From campus:
1. Walk out of university along the path which is the entrance the buses come into campus on towards Brighton.
2. When you reach the crossroads where the traffic lights are, go under the bridge and then straight on.
3. You should see a tunnel ahead of you with a no entry to cars sign, go through that tunnel.
4. Ahead of you up a slight hill on your left you should see a big car park and a large glass looking building. The tournament is in there!

Also, please pay £15 to Ash for the tournament. If you do not pay before 9am Monday morning then this will go up to £20! Once you have paid, email Ash ( [email protected] ) with your name, reference and amount paid. Just make sure you put [YOUR NAME] and TOURNAMENT MONEY in the reference.

This weekend is WAY too exciting

Why, you ask?

So. Much. Awesome. Stuff. Happening.

USA Club Championships are running in Florida this weekend – they’ve been running since Thursday. This is some of the best ultimate you can watch, and it’s being streamed FREE!!!

Head to the USA Ultimate youtube stream to check it out – open semi-finals are this evening, which should be CRAZY AWESOME.

http://www.youtube.com/user/usaultimate/

On Sunday, the women are playing Women’s Indoor Regionals – 10 teams from the South East region are coming to Brighton to fight it out for one of the four spots for nationals. It’s hosted at BACA – near campus, on the other side of the railway from the uni. Come along and support the three (!!!) Sussex women’s teams as they fight for a ticket to the big show.

And then, Sunday night. Hopefully, the women are going to be celebrating some hot results, and there’s no better way to celebrate with a discounted roast dinner, some drinks and watching the USA Open final in the Druids’. Game starts at 6.30, but you’re gonna wanna be there early to secure your seats… and get your roast on.

Women’s final will also be showing at the Druids’ from 3.45pm, but without sound. This will also be a kick ass game.

Training – Friday 5th October

Hey Hawks,

Here are the plans for Friday training (2-4pm) this week!

Everybody meet in Hall 1 of the Sports Centre at 2pm – we’ll work out who goes where after that.

Beginners: Bring clean indoor shoes! You will definitely be indoors for the session.

Experienced players: Bring indoor and outdoor gear. If you can’t be bothered to bring both, just bring outdoor stuff. Where people end up will depend on how many beginners we have and how many experienced.

See y’all on Friday, and keep throwing!

How to Get Good – Tips from Your Coaches

Hey Hawks,

Here are some tips me and Felix (those coach-y people scuttling around training on Wednesday) have put together to help everyone in the club, but especially our newest members, improve as quickly as possible. They seem pretty simple, but they’ll definitely help you develop your game.

1. Buy a disc, and use it. Don’t treat it like a trophy, but use it like a tool – it will get its share of wear and tear by landing on concrete, hitting walls and such, but it’ll all be worth it as your throwing and catching will improve constantly. Carry your disc around with you at all times, throw it at every opportunity.

2. Practice good technique. When you’re at training and a coach tells you how you need to change your technique or what you need to work on, focus on getting that thing better before the next session! You’ll then get something else to work on, and the improvement will keep rolling, rather than being stuck on that one thing. When catching or throwing, spend half the time striving for perfection (two handed clap catching in the centre of the disc, wide low pivots), and half the time trying new stuff, pushing your limits etc – but don’t linger inbetween these two extremes just throwing and catching in your comfort zone.

3. Play as much Ultimate as possible. Get on the pitch whenever you can, go to every training you’re invited and able to go to, get involved when you’re on the field, get the disc as much as you can.

4. Ask questions. Make use of the coaches by asking us as many questions as you want – we usually have good advice as we’ve been through the learning process ourselves, and may have helped dozens of people with the same question you’re asking. Don’t worry about the question sounding stupid – we all have to start somewhere and it’s always much better to ask than to keep it to yourself. It also helps to build up a rapport with the coach so any future advice we have for you can be communicated very quickly, and so that we know you are eager to learn!

5. Listen to the coaches. This seems obvious, but when a coach is explaining stuff to a group, pay attention and listen closely. There’s a lot of information being given out in a short amount of time, and any small part of it may change your game significantly. If the coach approaches you individually, listen to what they have to say, take it in, and ask a question if you don’t understand. Don’t feel you need to make an excuse or defend yourself!

6. Coach yourself. Overcompensation is the key to improving your own throwing and catching by yourself. If you drop a disc using your off-hand, then catch the next ten discs using only that hand. If your throws are ending up at a sharp angle, get them ending up at the opposite sharp angle. If your release is generally too high, release from ankle-height for a few minutes. By drastically overcompensating, you’ll be able to find the middle ground much easier and faster than making small adjustments.

SICKO 2012

Mohawks, Panthers and Brighton Ultimate are again hosting the annual SICKO tournament.  The Sussex Indoor Challenge Knock-Out tournament.  This year mind you it’s a bit smaller.  It’s being hosted at Sussex and Brighton Uni’s though, which is handy since that’s where the party is!  Saturday will see the women over at Brighton Uni Falmer Campus in their new sports hall.  Saturday morning the beginners are at Sussex’s sports hall until the afternoon slot, which is when the experienced division sets off.

After the day’s play everyone will head to their host, have something to eat and get dressed up for the party (Hospital theme).  The party is back on campus at the same place as last year.  Amazing party last year even despite the efforts of the fire alarm!  The bar staff have promised us they’ll change it to infra-red detection rather than smoke.  Smoke of course coming from the smoke machines the bar staff provided.

Sunday everyone is at Sussex’s sports centre for the finals.
